Allan Edson's intimate studies of woodland interiors are characterized by a remarkable sensitivity to light and rich delineation of textures evident in the fluttery yellow tree in the foreground and abstract patterns of the adjacent moss-covered rock. The bright yellow glimpsed behind the rock leads the eye to the reflections on the brown rushing water and far trees. It is possible the artist was painting with recently marketed aniline and coal-tar derived colours hailed for their intensity and durability.
