The play "Annette and Lubin" by Madame Favart was performed for the first time in 1762. It was inspired by a story by Marmontel, whose "prodigious" success was referred to in Baron Grimm's "Correspondence". In 1789, Debucourt put this print up for sale on a subscription basis, announcing that half of the income would be given to ageing actors. The actress who had first played the role of Annette was sixty years old by that time.
