Study of a Classical Bust, 1868
Wyatt Eaton
Canadian, 1849
- 1896
oil on canvas
61 x 43.2 cm
Purchased 1982
National Gallery of Canada (no. 26977)
Wyatt Eaton probably did this painting at the National Academy of Design in New York City, where he began attending classes in drawing from classical models in 1867. The bust is strikingly remniscent of the Apollo Belvedere, which was among the Academy's collection of casts. Artists of the time saw the Apollo Belvedere, a Roman copy of the original Greek sculpture, as the embodiment par excellence of an ideal of youthful beauty.
