In 1896, George Reid finally succeeded in fulfilling his desire to go to Spain, and more particularly to the Prado Museum in Madrid, where he executed this copy of a work by Velásquez. Thomas Eakins, his former professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, who had himself spent some months visiting the Prado collections, had instilled in him a taste for Velásquez's work.
