The Little Cavaliers, c. 1861-1862
etching with drypoint on chine volant
Printed by Auguste Delâtre
25.2 x 39 cm; plate: 24.8 x 38.7 cm
National Gallery of Canada (no. 18641)
This print is based upon Manet’s painted copy of "Réunion de treize personnages" (Louvre, c. 1650), at the time thought to be by Velázquez. Manet prepared the etching for inclusion in "Huit gravures à l'eau-forte" and considered it one of his most important early prints. It was exhibited at the Salon des Refusés in 1863, at his solo exhibition at Place d’Alma in 1867, and again at the Salon of 1869.
