A Young Lady Arranging her Garter, c. 1780-1789
Jean-Honoré Fragonard
French, 1732
- 1806
black chalk with brown wash on laid paper, laid down on laid paper
31.5 x 25 cm
Purchased 1978
National Gallery of Canada (no. 23001)
Fragonard's informal portrait of a woman caught adjusting her garter serves as the pretext for a delightful costume study. Sketched in a light and cursory manner, the woman's figure recedes into the background behind her billowing dress, a rich cascade of dense folds and great airy plumes of rich, satiny fabric.
