Constable's visits to Salisbury Cathedral and his friendship with the bishop, Dr. John Fisher, and his nephew John, resulted in the creation of several oil sketches and finished versions of the cathedral and its grounds. The present sketch, begun originally as a vertical composition, served as the starting point for the production of the celebrated group of pictures. This large-scale study from nature reveals the rich palette and vigorous brushwork characteristic of Constable's oeuvre.
