In 1872 Cézanne (1839-1906) moved from Paris to Pontoise to be closer to his friend Pissarro. Although Pissarro was only eight years older than Cézanne, the younger artist considered him an important artistic influence and a supportive father figure, a stark contrast to his own authoritarian father. Cézanne's imposing form dominates Pissarro's portrait.
