François Beaucourt
Canadian, 1740 - 1794
oil on canvas
84 x 68 cm

National Gallery of Canada (no. 18251)

Executed in Montreal towards the end of the 18th century, this portrait immortalizes a prosperous and elegantly dressed member of the bourgeois elite seated comfortably at his gaming table. He has just laid the ace of hearts down next to several gold and silver coins. Pausing, he gazes directly at us with a calm smile. Skilfully capturing a single brief moment, François Beaucourt has, through his choice of pose and accessories, created an ambiance that vividly conjures the world inhabited by his model.
