The Glorification of the Virgin, c. 1502
Albrecht Dürer
German, 1471
- 1528
woodcut on laid paper
29.9 x 21.2 cm
Purchased 1922
National Gallery of Canada (no. 2061)
This print concludes the 1511 published edition of the "Life of the Virgin". A subject that is not traditionally part of the cycle, it was likely designed originally as an independent woodcut. The Holy Family is shown surrounded by saints including St. Catherine, who kneels beside the pair before the broken wheel of her martyrdom, and St. John the Baptist, holding a lamb. Joseph stands in the background, holding his hat.
