Joachim and Anne embrace after being told to meet at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem by angels who foretold the birth of Mary. The arch of the gate, which acts like an architectural frame, draws the viewer into the scene as an observer. Spectators express curiosity, while at the lower left, one of Joachim’s shepherds follows him.
