St. George on Foot, c. 1502
Albrecht Dürer
German, 1471
- 1528
engraving on laid paper
11.2 x 7.1 cm
Purchased 1922
National Gallery of Canada (no. 2051)
The contrapposto pose of the knight, his head turned to one side and arm extended, suggests classical statuary clad in German tempered steel. Standing triumphant over the lifeless body of his dragon adversary, he holds the banner of the Order of St. George, founded in 1468 by Emperor Frederick III in order to oppose the Turkish invasions. St. George is shown before an exotic Levantine background consisting of a broad expanse of ocean dotted with tiny islands.
