SS. Peter, John the Evangelist?, and Bartholomew, c. 1385-1390
Tommaso del Mazza
Italian
egg tempera and gold leaf on wood, likely poplar
67.3 x 43.2 cm
Purchased 1922
National Gallery of Canada (no. 2024)
Until recently this artist was unknown, but he can now be identified as Tommaso del Mazza, whose activity is documented in Florence and Prato. It is likely that this panel is the left-hand portion of an altarpiece of unknown origin; its right-hand panel, now in a private collection, depicts Saints. John Gualbert, Benedict, and Lawrence. St. John Gualbert (d. 1073) was the founder of the Vallombrosan Order, a congregation of Benedictine monks whose abbey is situated near Florence.
