The viewer's eye is first attracted to the figures silhouetted in the dark foreground but quickly moves to the diaphanous light emanating from the window. The red bricks and blue wood of the adjacent house cast a pink and yellow glow into the room, softly illuminating the wooden floor and still life of glasses, ceramics, silver and fruit. Trained in Paris, Boston and Buffalo, Ernest Fosbery became Ottawa's most successful portrait painter.
