Although Dürer primarily produced woodcuts and engravings, he did execute six prints in the new technique of etching on an iron plate prepared with acid-resistant resin. While picking flowers in a meadow with her companions, Proserpine was abducted by Pluto, the god of the underworld. In Dürer’s version of the story, the god rides a wild-eyed unicorn.
