The Cottagers, c. 1815-1820

Known in another version as "Country Farm Yard, Devon", this delightful watercolour demonstrates the theories of the Picturesque then in vogue, which found beauty in the rustic charms of dilapidated cottages, and in irregular forms such as thatched roofs and warped fence-posts. It is a classic, storybook image of the English country cottage, complete with pigs and chickens, washing on the line, and an abundance of happy children mirroring the fecundity of nature itself.
