A caricaturist best known for his biting satire and savage wit, Rowlandson produced thousands of spritely pen-and-ink drawings delicately tinted with watercolour. His immense oeuvre embraces every imaginable facet of late Georgian life, and includes pastoral landscapes with genre elements, such as the present work. Possibly a view in Cornwall, Rowlandson's quickly executed sketch shows the satisfying integration of town and country life that England enjoyed before the advent of the Industrial Revolution.
