This Florentine artist is documented as taking an apprentice in 1296, suggesting that he was already well established by that time. His lyrical and gothicizing style acknowledges that of Duccio. The asymmetrical frame design and the direction of St. John's gaze indicate that this panel was placed to the far right of an altarpiece whose central image has been identified as a Virgin and Child. That panel is now in the Acton collection in Florence, together with panels of Paul and Peter. Another panel representing St. John the Baptist is in a private collection.
