Carrière worked in his friend Jules Chéret's studio. He participated in Symbolist circles and was close to Paul Gauguin and Auguste Rodin. Carrière had given up commercial lithography in 1889, but produced the lithograph for this poster for the newspaper "L'Aurore" in 1897, at the request of its editor, Georges Clemenceau.
