Unknown (Indian, Himachal Pradesh, Mandi - c. 1700)
opaque watercolour on paper
22.3 x 16 cm irregular
Gift of Max Tanenbaum, Toronto, 1979
National Gallery of Canada (no. 23627)
The portrait depicts the Raja of Mandi, Sidh Sen (1627-1727), a warrior of tremendous stature who was credited with supernatural powers. He lived to be one hundred years old. The painting, typical of the Mandi style around 1735, was probably commissioned after his death by his grandson, the Raja Shamser Sen, who ruled Mandi from 1727 to 1781.
