Folio from a Ragamala Series: Shri Raga Chandra, late 17th century
Unknown (Indian, Himachal Pradesh, Bilaspur - late 17th century)
opaque watercolour on paper, laid on laminated paper
25.6 x 19.5 cm
Gift of Max Tanenbaum, Toronto, 1979
National Gallery of Canada (no. 23614)
Sri Raga is one of the six original "male" musical modes, to be played early in the evening in winter. The iconography of this painting is somewhat unusual as it seems to also implicate a meditation on the effect of the new moon.
