The sacred text of the Jain religion, the "Kalpasutra" describes the past lives of the founder of the religion, Vardhamana, better known as Mahavira ("Great Hero"). In the illustration above, the queen tells his father, king Siddhartha, her dreams foretelling his birth. Below, in his initiation scene, he is shown with adorers, including a musician with a trumpet.
