The son of Babur, the first Mughal Emperor, Humayun ruled India from 1530 to 1556 though in 1540 he took refuge in Iran. A poet and collector of books, he wrote his memoirs in Persian and brought Iranian painters to his court at Delhi. He died at Delhi in 1556 following a fall in his library. This posthumous portrait dates from the reign of his great- grandson.
