This print was commissioned for "Sonnets et eaux-fortes" (1869), a book conceived in the spirit of the etching revival with its pairing of poetry and artists' prints. As a source for this etching, Manet draws upon Goya's "Los Caprichos" print series of 1797-99, evoking the Spanish master's graphic style in the silhouette contours of the model, her "Maja"-like features, and dark mantilla head covering.
