Self-portrait, 1855
Cornelius Krieghoff
Canadian, 1815
- 1872
oil on canvas
28.8 x 24.8 cm
Purchased 1920
National Gallery of Canada (no. 1657)
This unique self-portrait by Cornelius Krieghoff was executed in Quebec City when the artist was forty years old and in his prime, both physically and artistically. Accounts left by his friends describe Kreighoff as affable and easy-going, yet the face pictured here is serious and reserved. Perhaps he felt it was a more appropriate image to pass on to posterity.
