Wooded Landscape at the Hermitage (Pontoise), 1879-1880 ?

Camille Pissarro
Danish, French, 1830 - 1903
soft-ground etching, aquatint and drypoint on japan paper
Printed by Salmon
26.9 x 35.9 cm; plate: 22.1 x 26.9 cm
Purchased 1975
National Gallery of Canada (no. 18312)

This print was undertaken as Pissarro’s contribution to the print journal "Le Jour et la Nuit" (Day and Night). While the journal never appeared, the artist clearly thought highly of this print as he exhibited four states in a frame at the fifth Impressionist exhibition of 1880. This impression is from the edition of fifty of the sixth and final state on Japan paper. Through the sequence of states Pissarro varies the application of aquatint to change the density of grey tones.
