bronze

Royal Canadian Academy of Arts diploma work, deposited by the artist, Montreal, 1923
National Gallery of Canada (no. 2043)
The destruction of cultural monuments and the huge toll in human life during the First World War (1914-1918) elicited responses from artists across Europe and Canada. With brandished sword Hébert's figure aggressively strikes with brutal force. It is war itself in all its indiscriminate ferocity.
