Francisco Bayeu
Spanish, 1734
- 1795
oil on canvas
109.2 x 81.3 cm

Bayeu y Subías was appointed court painter to Charles IV in 1788, and later became the director of the Royal Academy of San Fernando at Madrid. His portraits, few in number, are often mistaken for those of his brother-in-law, Francisco Goya. The sitter in this picture remains unidentified, but his style of dress and the fact that most of Bayeu's portraits were painted late in his career, provide us with an approximate date.
