Inspiration, 1904

Louis-Philippe Hébert
Canadian, 1850 - 1917
bronze
56.5 x 22.8 x 24.6 cm
Royal Canadian Academy of Arts diploma work, deposited by the artist, Montreal, 1906
National Gallery of Canada (no. 245)

Art became the frequent subject of art as Canadian artists investigated the role of the artist, the studio and the creative process. In this symbolist self-portrait the winged figure of inspiration whispers into Hébert’s ear and guides his hand in which he holds a chisel, symbol of his profession though he had long abandoned carving for modeling and casting.
