Peter Doig reconceptualizes traditional landscape painting in creating eerie, dream-like works that fall somewhere between reality and the imagined. Painting both from memory and from photographs or old postcards, Doig transforms his source imagery to evoke a mood or experience - a sense of “being there”. "Grand Riviere" is his first painting of Trinidad, where he lived as a child before moving to Canada and then to London, England, where this painting was created in his studio. In this lush tropical scene, we can see references to Canadian landscape painting, a clear influence throughout Doig’s career. The unnatural use of colour, dense foliage and lack of human presence make for a dark and slightly unsettling landscape, as Doig was interested in transcending the romantic cliché of the moonlit beach and wandering horse.
