From 1962 to 1967 Christiane Pflug painted in her home studio on Woodlawn Avenue in Toronto. Her paintings focused on domestic interiors and dolls became surrogate models. With her husband, then a medical student, working long hours and her children young, these doll paintings articulated Pflug's uncertainties and fears. The black doll depicted on the back balcony looking through the panes of the closed kitchen door addresses themes of loneliness and emotional separation.
