Painting, 1955
Gordon Smith
British, Canadian, 1919
oil on canvas
70.5 x 101 cm
Purchased 2002
National Gallery of Canada (no. 40996)
A key work in Smith's development, "Painting" is constructed of vertical bands of black, ochre and reddish brown. Black paint has been applied over ochre and rubbed off in areas to reveal the underlying colour. White lines and circles are inscribed in vertical, compartment-like forms. While retaining the grid of his earlier abstracted landscapes, the image has disappeared and the painting looks forward to his organic abstracts of 1956.
