The Arsenal, Venice, c. 1743

Italian, 1721
- 1780
oil on canvas

National Gallery of Canada (no. 3719)
The Great Gate to the Arsenal is surmounted by a winged lion, symbol of St. Mark, Venice's Patron Saint. The two towers mark the entrance by water to this large shipyard, and in the background one can see the masts of ships. Bellotto's more dramatic use of light and dark shadows distinguishes his work from that of his uncle and teacher, Canaletto, whose views of Venice are also seen in this room.
