Volunteers’ Circle of the National Gallery of Canada
Created in 1958 from a nucleus of a few art enthusiasts meeting in a private home, the Volunteers’ Circle has proven itself to be a remarkable force. It raised funds toward the installation of the heritage Rideau Convent chapel to be installed in the Gallery’s new building, which opened to the public in 1988. Today, the Volunteers’ Circle offers challenging study groups, excellent educational outreach programs, and a strong well established docent group. Over its 50 years, the Volunteers’ Circle has presented the National Gallery with over $1 million in donation and acquisitions.
The first president of the National Gallery Association as it was known in 1958, Hamilton Southam, summed up the feelings of the neophyte group: “We regarded ourselves as belonging to the National Gallery family”. Today, the Gallery Director, Pierre Théberge says “…The Gallery’s volunteers have always contributed to keeping the familial spirit alive”.
