TABLE OF CONTENTS
William and Ruth Hood fonds:
Ruth Barker Hood (1903-1999) and William Hood (1904-1994) met several members of the Group of Seven, including A.Y. Jackson (1882-1974) and Arthur Lismer (1885-1969), when they were members of the Toronto Art Students' League and Ruth was a student at the Ontario School of Art (1927- ca. 1931). After marrying in 1930 and moving to the northern mining town of Swastika, Ontario the following year, the Hoods corresponded with Jackson, Lismer, and Lawren Harris (1885-1970), particularly from early 1931 to late 1932, when Jackson invited them to participate in the November 1931 Group of Seven show at the Art Gallery of Toronto.
The fonds consists of correspondence, exhibition related material, and photographs of William Hood, Ruth Hood, and their daughter Diana, and photographs of members of the Toronto Art Students' League. Correspondence includes letters from Group of Seven artists A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer (1885-1969) and Lawren Harris (1885-1970), and Group of Seven biographer Fred Housser. The letters contain information about Group of Seven activities and encouragement to the Hoods about their own painting. The photographs document various Art Students' League outings and field trips to artists' studios (e.g. Frances Loring (1887-1968), Florence Wyle (1881-1968) and Lawren Harris). The exhibition material pertains to the December 1931 Group of Seven show at the Art Gallery of Toronto, and to the Annual Exhibition of Canadian Art 1931-1932 at the National Gallery of Canada. A second accrual was donated in 1998 by Michael Hood, son of William and Ruth, consisting of William and Ruth's wedding book with signatures of a number of Canadian artists, including Yvonne McKague Housser (1897-1996), Gordon Webber (1912-1986) and Charles Goldhamer (1903-1985). Also included are three notes of congratulations and one newspaper clipping related to the fine arts course at McMaster University.
