This is a photograph of Yonge Street in Toronto. Many of Collyer’s photographs are taken in his home city. Avoiding the beautiful, Collyer focuses on mundane aspects of the urban environment – a parking lot, buildings, a sidewalk with passersby. This image belongs to a series of photographs Collyer made between 1992 and 1998. He scanned the images and then digitally removed the text from the signage. He also subtly heightened and harmonized the colours. This act recalls the early photographic practice of retouching. Collyer is suspicious of the widespread manipulation of images, and says that “... it is not possible to ‘trust” a photographic image anymore.” (Artist statement, 199--) He uses the new photographic technologies in a traditional way.
