In the early 1830s, a cholera epidemic struck Europe. The disease reached the shores of the Saint-Lawrence in 1832, carried by the thousands of immigrants arriving from Great Britain. In Quebec City, it would claim the lives of 3,451 people (about one tenth of the population).
