Brener approaches his art installations by referring to sources external to art. He is inspired by social commentary, what he reads, his own life, as well as music and technology. Brener mentioned that Capital Z was simply inspired by the game of Monopoly in which the objective is to acquire capital, houses and hotels. He also found inspiration in the novel High Rise that deals with stormy relationships between the tenants of a building. These two inspirations were overshadowed in the final work.
