Escher rarely made portraits, and those he did were of a handful of friends and family members. His few self-portraits are characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Hand with Reflecting Sphere is of special interest, because the mirrored globe reflects the artist’s working environment in his Roman studio. This print was made the year he left Rome, after living there for more than a decade.
Located on the top floor of his home, Escher’s studio included a small living area with a few armchairs, where he received close friends or took time to rest. His worktable can be seen at the right rear, well lit by two windows, one of which is barely visible.
