Castrovalva is a tiny mountain hamlet that sits atop Monte Sant'Angelo in the Abruzzi region of central Italy. Seen below it is the village of Anversa degli Abruzzi and, in the distance, the village of Cocullo. The region is arid and poor, but Escher was drawn by its spectacular landscapes, its distinctive rural architecture and the local people.
