Two Water-mills was presented to the people of Canada by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands to commemorate Canada's role in the liberation of the Netherlands in 1944-45 and Canada's hospitality to the royal family during the Second World War. The painting, typical of the artist's work, features a charming Dutch hamlet. A road in the foreground leads to two water-mills in the middle ground, which are strongly lit in comparison. to the darker background. The space opens onto a vast panorama of Dutch countryside.
