Owl's Head Mountain,
Duncanson, Robert S.
oil on canvas
45.7 x 91.7 cm

Owl's Head Mountain depicts a landmark on Lake Memphremagog well known to those who travelled to the Eastern Townships near Montreal. Duncanson's different approach becomes evident in contrast to other paintings of the same or similar subjects. Cornelius Kreighoffs Owl's Head, Lake Memphremagog (1859), for example, pictures a dramatic autumn storm, while Allan Edson's Mount Orford, Morning (1870) records the play of light on a cool, cloudy day.
