The son of a merchant, Jacob Jordaens received his artistic training in the studio of Adam Van Noort (seated at the table to the right in this painting) and married his teacher's daughter Catherine (at the left in the painting). Jordaens, who achieved great renown during his lifetime, portrays himself here as the fool in the background.
