William Raphael

At 21 years of age, William Raphael studied at the Berlin Academy for one year, then immigrated to New York in 1856. The following year, he settled in Canada and worked as an artist in Quebec City and Montreal. The elegant style of his numerous genre scenes is borrowed from romantic German painters that he must have seen in Berlin. In his paintings, Raphael immortalized places that were later transformed and lifestyles that have since disappeared.
