Natar Ungalaq

Natar Ungalaq grew up in various camps in the Foxe Basin/Melville Peninsula region. His family moved to Igloolik in 1965. Starting to carve at age ten, he recalls, "The first tool I ever used... was a file. I asked my grandfather if I could borrow his file." Primarily a self-taught artist, Ungalaq acknowledges that he also learned to carve from watching other sculptors in Igloolik. Recurring themes in his work include narrative hunting scenes and interpretations of the supernatural world.
