Ilse Bing

Bing's first professional photographs were made in 1928 and used to illustrate her doctoral thesis in art history on the architect Friedrich Gilly. In 1929-30 she created photostories for a Frankfurt newspaper. In 1930 she abandoned her academic studies and moved to Paris, becoming renowned for photojournalism, portraiture, advertising, fashion, and theatre photography. Her work was included in a New York exhibition of modern European photography in 1932. In 1941 Bing and her husband emigrated to New York as war refugees. She stopped photographing in 1959, and turned to poetry, drawing, and painting.
