Reading Sculptures : Grade 7-8

Summary

This lesson presents 10 Inuit artists whose work reflects traditions that are thousands of years old and bears witness to a culture that is alive and well, and in full transition. Students will discover how artists use the elements and principles of design to convey ideas and feelings and create an expressive clay sculpture.

Theory:

Students will describe how the elements of design are used to create an area of emphasis.

Creation:

Students will produce a three dimensional work of art, using a variety of design strategies.

Analysis:

Students will explain their preference for specific artworks, with reference to the artist?s use of the principles of design and their understanding of the ideas and feelings expressed in the artwork.
