Alex Colville
Painter, draughtsman, printmaker and muralist, David Alexander Colville was born in Toronto in 1920, and moved as a child with his family to Amherst, Nova Scotia. He studied at Mount Allison University (1938-42), served with the Canadian Army (1942-46), and worked as a war artist (1944-46). Returning to Canada, Colville taught at Mount Allison (1946-63), resigning to devote his time fully to painting. He has been honoured with major retrospectives of his work at the Art Gallery of Ontario (1985), and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art (1995). In 1982 he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, and in 2003, he was a winner in the Governor General?s awards for visual arts. He has lived in Wolfville, Nova Scotia since 1971.
