    Thinking Contemporary Art; Curating Contemporaneity

A talk with Terry Smith, author and professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh.

    Thinking Contemporary Art; Curating Contemporaneity

For over a decade, US-based, Australian art historian Terry Smith has argued that artists, architects, curators and art theorists have been responding to the nature of contemporary reality in terms of its definitive quality, its differential contemporaneity. He discusses the key ideas underlying his widely read and often controversial books, including: What Is Contemporary Art? (2009), Contemporary Art: World Currents (2011) and Thinking Contemporary Curating (2012).

The First Popular Photography War: Soldiers' Pictures 1914-1918
    Lecture Hall

Free  •  In English with simultaneous translation and bilingual question period

With Janina Struk, documentary photographer and author of Private Pictures: Soldiers' Inside View of War (2011)

By 1914 the rise of popular photography had meant that many soldiers were able to take their cameras to war - often in defiance of military regulations. The legacy of their sometimes disturbing photographs and poignant photo albums stands in stark contrast to the sanitized propaganda imposed by governments at the time.
